Mehram (Guardian)✨
Why women have a guardian in Islam?
We need to understand first that Islam believe there is an equality of value between men and women but they don't have identicality in roles.

What it concerns women having a guardian, it's true they need a mehram but in very restricted context like marriage and traveling long distance.
A male guardian doesn't diminish from the woman value or her independence.
We know that important people require protection, so it's a good protection to have, it didn't come to oppress and limit women.

Wilaya (guardianship) in marriage is a kind of protection instituted by Islamic law to secure the interest of a woman's rights at a time when she is starting an important phase in her life, if you notice many marriages that have been done without a wali tend to be very oppressive and toxic, why? Cause the man knows that this woman have no one to defend her rights if he does something wrong, unlike a woman who have men in her family to watch out for her.

What about someone who doesn't have a wali then?
the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "If there is a dispute, the sultan (man in authority) is the guardian of one who has none."

In some cases women can marry themselves (in the hanafi madhab) or she can assign another wali for herself, for more info about this better ask an imam or mufti 💕
